Gurgaon to Leh route plan via Jammu

Agar Gurgaon → Leh bike ride karni hai aur Jammu side se Srinagar–Kargil route lena hai, to main route ko main practical motorcycle-trip ke hisaab se plan karunga—not just Google Maps shortest route.

9

🏍️ Gurgaon → Leh via Jammu–Srinagar–Kargil

Main route:

Gurgaon → Delhi → Panipat → Karnal → Ambala → Ludhiana → Jalandhar → Pathankot → Jammu → Udhampur → Ramban → Banihal → Srinagar → Sonamarg → Zoji La → Drass → Kargil → Mulbekh → Namika La → Fotu La → Lamayuru → Nimmu → Leh

Srinagar–Leh section officially listed by Leh district administration is about 434 km, via Srinagar, Drass and Kargil.

🗺️ Overall distance

Gurgaon → Leh via this route will be roughly 1,300–1,350 km, depending on exactly where you start/stop and the route used around Delhi/Jammu.

A good motorcycle plan is 5 days to reach Leh, rather than trying to do it in 3–4 days.

DAY 1 — Gurgaon → Jammu

Approx. 575–600 km

Route

Suggested start

04:00–05:00 AM from Gurgaon

This is basically a highway day. The biggest advantage is that you cover the plains while you're fresh.

Night

Jammu

Don't try to push Jammu → Srinagar on the same day after already doing 600 km on a motorcycle.

Target: Reach Jammu around 5–7 PM.

Important

This portion is primarily NH44/highway riding. The Delhi–Jammu leg is the physically easy part compared with what comes later.

DAY 2 — Jammu → Srinagar

Approx. 250–280 km

Major landmarks

  • Chenani–Nashri Tunnel
  • Ramban
  • Banihal
  • Banihal/Qazigund area
  • Anantnag
  • Srinagar

Start

07:00 AM

No need for a 4 AM start.

Riding time

Approximately 7–9 hours, depending heavily on traffic, road work and weather.

Night

Srinagar

I strongly recommend spending the night here rather than immediately continuing toward Kargil.

Why?

Because from Srinagar onward, you're entering the altitude portion of the trip.

Srinagar is around 1,585 m, and the route then climbs progressively toward Kargil and Leh. This makes the Srinagar approach preferable for acclimatization compared with a very rapid ascent from the Manali side.

DAY 3 — Srinagar → Kargil

Approx. 200–210 km

This is where the actual Ladakh ride begins.

10

Route

Srinagar
↓
Ganderbal
↓
Kangan
↓
Sonamarg
↓
Baltal
↓
Zoji La
↓
Drass
↓
Kargil War Memorial
↓
Kargil

07:00 AM — Srinagar departure

Have breakfast and leave.

Srinagar → Sonamarg

Approximately 80–90 km.

Sonamarg is your last major green Kashmir Valley stop before the landscape changes dramatically.

Sonamarg

Take a short break.

Fuel up if required.

Then prepare for:

⚠️ ZOJI LA

Altitude: ~3,528 m / 11,575 ft

This is one of the major sections of the entire ride.

The Srinagar–Leh highway's main weather-sensitive section is Zoji La, where snow, landslides, traffic restrictions and weather can affect movement.

Riding strategy

Don't race here.

  • Keep distance from trucks.
  • Don't overtake blindly.
  • Watch for loose stones.
  • Don't stop on blind corners.
  • Keep gloves/jacket accessible.
  • Avoid crossing late in the day.
  • Follow the day's traffic/convoy restrictions.

The road condition can change significantly depending on weather and maintenance.

Zoji La → Drass

Once you cross Zoji La, you'll notice an enormous landscape change.

Green Kashmir → cold, barren Ladakh

Drass is roughly 3,280 m.

Stop: Drass

Take a break.

Fuel if required.

Then continue toward Kargil.

Kargil War Memorial

This is a must-stop for me on this route.

It is just before Kargil on the Drass side.

Spend around 45–60 minutes.

Then:

Kargil War Memorial → Kargil

Night stay

Kargil

The standard Srinagar–Leh itinerary commonly uses Kargil as the overnight halt, splitting the roughly 434-km Srinagar–Leh road into two manageable days.

DAY 4 — Kargil → Leh

Approx. 220–230 km

This is probably the most scenic riding day.

8

Route

Kargil
↓
Mulbekh
↓
Namika La
↓
Fotu La
↓
Lamayuru
↓
Khaltse
↓
Nimmu
↓
Sangam
↓
Gurudwara Pathar Sahib
↓
Magnetic Hill
↓
Leh

Kargil → Mulbekh

Approximately 40–45 km.

Mulbekh

Stop here.

You'll see the famous rock-carved Maitreya/Buddha sculpture.

Then continue.

Namika La

Altitude approximately 3,700 m.

The landscape becomes increasingly barren.

Take a short photo stop, but don't spend too much time at high altitude.

Fotu La

~4,108 m / 13,478 ft

This is the highest point on the Srinagar–Leh highway.

So your route has roughly:

Zoji La → 3,528 m

Namika La → 3,700 m

Fotu La → 4,108 m

Then you descend toward Lamayuru.

Lamayuru

This is one of the places where I'd recommend taking a proper break.

See:

  • Lamayuru Monastery
  • Moonland landscape
  • Mountain formations

Have lunch/tea here.

Lamayuru → Khaltse

Then the road starts following the Indus valley.

After Khaltse:

Khaltse → Nimmu

Nimmu / Sangam

You can stop at the famous Indus–Zanskar confluence.

Then:

Nimmu → Gurudwara Pathar Sahib

Short stop.

Magnetic Hill

Another classic Ladakh stop.

Don't spend too much time here if you're already tired.

Then:

Magnetic Hill → Leh

🏁 LEH

You'll finally enter Leh.

Approx. total from Gurgaon: 1,300+ km

And now comes a very important rule:

DON'T immediately start sightseeing in Leh.

Your body has just climbed to around 3,500 m.

Eat.

Hydrate.

Check into hotel.

Take rest.

Sleep.

DAY 5 — Leh REST / ACCLIMATIZATION

This day should be mandatory, especially if you're riding from Gurgaon.

Don't make this:

"Leh aa gaye, ab Khardung La chalte hain."

❌ Bad idea.

Instead:

Morning

Sleep properly.

Breakfast.

Walk slowly around Leh.

Afternoon

  • Leh Market
  • Leh Palace
  • Shanti Stupa

Evening

Relax.

DAY 6 — Leh Local Ride

Now you can start exploring.

Possible circuit:

Leh
→ Shey
→ Thiksey
→ Rancho School
→ Hemis
→ return Leh

4

This is a relatively easy acclimatization day.

Then your actual Ladakh circuit

If you're coming all the way from Gurgaon on a bike, I'd recommend not stopping at Leh.

Do:

OPTION A — Nubra

Leh → Khardung La → Khalsar → Diskit → Hunder

Stay:

Hunder/Nubra

Next day:

Hunder → Turtuk → Hunder

Then:

Nubra → Leh

OPTION B — Pangong

After acclimatization:

Leh → Karu → Chang La → Durbuk → Tangtse → Pangong Lake

Stay:

Pangong

Next day:

Pangong → Chang La → Leh

OPTION C — Complete Ladakh circuit

If you have sufficient time:

Gurgaon
→ Jammu
→ Srinagar
→ Kargil
→ Leh
→ Nubra
→ Pangong
→ Leh
→ Hanle
→ Tso Moriri
→ Leh

This becomes a proper 12–16 day motorcycle expedition, rather than just a Gurgaon–Leh ride.

⛽ Fuel planning

For your bike, don't depend on every small village having fuel.

On the Srinagar–Leh route, commonly used fuel points include Sonamarg, Drass, Kargil and Khaltsi, with Leh as the major base.

Practical rule

Whenever you see a reliable petrol pump:

Top up.

Don't think:

"Abhi half tank hai, next pump pe bharwa lunga."

Mountain route mein ye mistake expensive ho sakti hai.

🏍️ Bike preparation

For a Gurgaon → Leh motorcycle ride, I'd carry:

Mechanical

  • 2 spare tubes if your bike uses tubes
  • Puncture kit
  • Portable air compressor
  • Chain lube
  • Spare clutch cable
  • Spare accelerator cable
  • Fuses
  • Basic tool kit
  • Cable ties
  • Electrical tape
  • Spare bulbs if applicable
  • Engine oil/top-up as appropriate
  • Brake-pad check
  • Chain/sprocket check
  • Tyre condition check

Electrical

  • Mobile charger
  • Power bank
  • USB charger
  • Extra charging cable
  • Headlamp

Riding gear

  • Full-face helmet
  • Riding jacket
  • Riding pants
  • Waterproof layer
  • Riding gloves
  • Thermal inner
  • Good socks
  • Waterproof shoes/boots

🧥 Temperature planning

Don't assume:

"June/July hai, Ladakh mein garmi hogi."

Wrong.

You can experience:

Gurgaon: hot

↓

Jammu: hot

↓

Srinagar: pleasant

↓

Zoji La: cold/windy

↓

Drass: very cold

↓

Kargil: cold

↓

Fotu La: very cold/windy

↓

Leh: sunny but cold mornings/evenings

🩺 Altitude

This is one of the biggest reasons I prefer your route.

Your altitude progression is approximately:

Gurgaon → low altitude

↓

Jammu ~300 m

↓

Srinagar ~1,585 m

↓

Kargil ~2,676 m

↓

Leh ~3,500 m

This is much more gradual than flying directly into Leh.

The official Leh district information confirms Srinagar–Leh as the principal road approach and notes that the highway is seasonally open, generally from around May into late year depending on conditions.

In Leh

First 24 hours:

  • Drink water regularly
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Don't run
  • Don't do heavy exercise
  • Don't ride aggressively
  • Sleep properly

If you develop severe headache, vomiting, confusion, breathlessness at rest, inability to walk normally, or rapidly worsening symptoms, don't try to "push through"—descend and seek medical help.

📅 My recommended complete itinerary

For a comfortable motorcycle expedition, I'd do:

DayRouteApprox
1Gurgaon → Jammu580 km
2Jammu → Srinagar270 km
3Srinagar → Sonamarg → Zoji La → Drass → Kargil200 km
4Kargil → Mulbekh → Namika La → Fotu La → Lamayuru → Leh230 km
5Leh — Rest—
6Leh → Shey → Thiksey → Hemis → Leh80–100 km
7Leh → Khardung La → Nubra120–130 km
8Nubra → Turtuk → Nubra150 km
9Nubra → Leh130 km
10Leh → Chang La → Pangong~160 km
11Pangong → Leh~160 km
12Leh local / buffer—
13Leh → Kargil~220 km
14Kargil → Srinagar~200 km
15Srinagar → Jammu~270 km
16Jammu → Gurgaon~580 km

Total: roughly 3,500+ km, depending on local exploration.

⚠️ One very important 2026 point

Because you're planning a real motorcycle trip, don't treat the Zoji La road status as fixed months in advance. Current 2026 reporting shows the Srinagar–Leh route can be open while Sonamarg–Zoji La / Zoji La–Drass remains subject to restrictions, and weather can change the situation quickly.

Before leaving Srinagar, check same-day traffic/BRO/local administration status for Zoji La.

Also, the Zoji La tunnel is still not something you should plan your 2026 trip around as an operational alternative; the existing pass remains the relevant route for this journey.

🏆 Mere hisaab se best route

Gurgaon → Jammu → Srinagar → Sonamarg → Zoji La → Drass → Kargil → Mulbekh → Namika La → Fotu La → Lamayuru → Nimmu → Leh

Ye route tumhare liye Manali side se jaane ke comparison mein better first approach hai because altitude gradually build hoti hai, aur route mein Kashmir + Zoji La + Kargil + Ladakh sab cover ho jata hai.
