Complete Spiti Valley Bike Trip Plan – Delhi / Gurgaon to Spiti Valley

Recommended route: Shimla – Kinnaur – Spiti – Manali

Spiti Valley in Winter | Travel & Stay with Eco Hospitality

Spiti Valley is one of the most beautiful motorcycle destinations in India. You will experience high mountain passes, cold deserts, monasteries, remote villages, rivers, beautiful lakes and some challenging roads.

For a motorcycle trip from Gurgaon/Delhi NCR, I recommend a 10–12 day itinerary, entering through Shimla and Kinnaur and exiting through Manali, provided the Manali–Kunzum–Chandratal route is open.

1. Trip overview

Particular

Details

Starting point

Gurgaon / Delhi

Destination

Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Total duration

10–12 days

Approx. total distance

1,800–2,100 km

Recommended season

June–September

Highest point

Route

Shimla → Kinnaur → Kaza → Chandratal → Manali

Important seasonal note: It is November 3, 2026. If you are planning to ride immediately, this is a winter expedition rather than the normal Spiti circuit. Kunzum Pass and the Manali–Kaza route are generally closed in winter due to snow. For the complete circuit, plan for summer 2027 and verify official road conditions before departure.

2. Complete route map

There are two main ways to enter Spiti:

  • Shimla side: Longer but generally more reliable for a summer circuit.

  • Manali side: Shorter, but involves Kunzum Pass and challenging high-altitude terrain.

My recommendation is to enter via Shimla and exit via Manali.

3. Day-wise detailed bike trip itinerary

4. Important places you should not miss

5. Estimated trip budget

For one person on one motorcycle, assuming 11 days and budget guesthouses:

Expense

Estimated cost

Petrol

₹5,000–7,000

Accommodation

₹6,000–10,000

Food

₹4,000–6,000

Bike maintenance

₹1,500–3,000

Camping / sightseeing

₹1,000–2,000

Miscellaneous

₹2,000–3,000

Total

₹19,500–31,000

Estimates only; actual fuel consumption, room sharing, season and availability will change the budget. Excludes bike rental, major repairs and emergency expenses.

6. Bike preparation checklist

For Spiti, bike preparation is extremely important. Some roads have loose stones, gravel, water crossings and broken surfaces.

Before starting from Gurgaon

Carry these essentials:

  • Riding jacket, riding pants, gloves and riding boots.

  • Thermal innerwear and waterproof riding gear.

  • Full-face helmet.

  • Power bank and offline maps.

  • Puncture repair kit and portable tyre inflator.

  • First-aid kit and personal medication.

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm.

  • Cash because digital payments may not work everywhere.

7. Petrol pumps and fuel planning

Fuel planning is important because petrol stations are limited in remote parts of Spiti.

Fill full tank

Reckong Peo

Kaza

Refuel

Manali

Refuel

My recommendation:

  • Start every major mountain section with a full tank.

  • Carry an approved, properly secured spare fuel container if your bike's range requires it.

  • Don't assume petrol will be available in remote villages.

  • Check fuel availability in Kaza before attempting local excursions.

8. Accommodation and stay locations

Look for budget guesthouses, homestays and camps in these places:

Location

Suggested stay

Narkanda

Hotel / homestay

Kalpa

Mountain-view homestay

Tabo

Guesthouse

Kaza

Hotel / homestay

Chandratal

Book refundable accommodation wherever possible because mountain road closures can change your itinerary.

9. Best time to visit Spiti Valley

May – June

Good
Snow-covered mountains, pleasant daytime weather, but Kunzum may still be closed.

July – August

Caution
Green landscapes and accessible high passes, but monsoon landslides and road damage are risks, especially on the Shimla–Kinnaur approach.

September

Excellent
Generally a good balance of accessible roads, clear skies and photography opportunities. Snowfall can still affect high passes.

October – November

Winter conditions
Very cold, with increasing risk of snowfall and pass closures.

December – March

Not recommended for this circuit
Severe winter conditions and major road restrictions.

The Himachal Tourism Department recommends April–October as a broad travel window, but the complete Manali–Kunzum circuit depends on actual pass opening dates.

The Shimla–Kinnaur route is the usual winter access route to Spiti, but even this route needs daily checks for snowfall, landslides and local restrictions. The official district administration describes it as an almost all-weather connection, not a guaranteed open road.

11. Important safety advice

  1. Spend sufficient time acclimatising before going to high-altitude locations.

  2. Don't ride aggressively at high altitudes.

  3. Avoid riding through unknown water crossings.

  4. Never ride alone through remote stretches without informing someone about your route.

  5. Don't ignore headaches, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness at altitude. Descend and seek medical help if altitude sickness is suspected.

  6. Keep emergency cash and offline navigation available.

Kaza has a Community Health Centre, while Tabo and Kibber have smaller medical facilities. Medical services are limited in the valley.
