Complete Spiti Valley Bike Trip Plan – Agra to Spiti Valley
If you are starting from Agra, I recommend the Shimla–Kinnaur entry route and Manali exit route. This gives you a complete Spiti circuit with beautiful mountain roads, remote villages, monasteries, high-altitude passes and Chandratal Lake.
My recommendation is a 12–14 day motorcycle expedition, rather than trying to complete it in 9–10 days.
1. Trip overview
Particular | Details |
|---|---|
Starting point | Agra, Uttar Pradesh |
Destination | Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh |
Duration | 12–14 days |
Approx. total distance | 2,200–2,500 km |
Recommended bike | Himalayan / Royal Enfield |

Best season | June–September |
Highest point | Kunzum Pass – approx. 4,551 m |

Important: For the complete circuit, plan around June–September 2027, subject to actual road openings. Since it is November 2026, don't attempt the Kunzum–Chandratal–Manali section as a normal through-route now. Winter conditions can close these roads.

4. Must-visit places in Spiti Valley
These are the places I would definitely include in your motorcycle trip.
1. Key Monastery
Ancient Buddhist monastery.
2. Chicham Bridge
Spectacular mountain bridge.
4. Hikkim
Famous high-altitude post office.
6. Chandratal Lake
One of the most beautiful mountain lakes.
5. Estimated trip budget – Agra to Spiti
Assuming one rider, one motorcycle, 14 days and budget accommodation:
Expense | Estimated amount |
|---|---|
Petrol | ₹8,000–11,000 |
Accommodation | ₹10,000–14,000 |
Food | ₹6,000–8,000 |
Bike maintenance | ₹2,000–4,000 |
Camping / sightseeing | ₹1,500–2,500 |
Miscellaneous | ₹3,000–5,000 |
Total | ₹30,500–44,500 |
Budget assumes a reasonably fuel-efficient motorcycle and economical stays. Keep an additional emergency reserve for repairs, medical needs and unexpected accommodation.
If two people share a room and ride together on separate bikes, accommodation costs can be divided.
6. Petrol and fuel planning
Fuel planning is important in Spiti because petrol stations are limited.
Location | Fuel recommendation |
|---|---|
Agra | Fill full tank |
Chandigarh | Refuel |
Shimla / Narkanda | Refuel |
Rampur | Refuel |
Reckong Peo | Top up |
Kaza | Fill full tank |
Manali | Refuel |
Important: The stretch between Reckong Peo and Kaza has limited fuel options. Don't depend on finding petrol in small villages.
7. Accommodation plan
Recommended overnight locations:
Day | Stay location |
|---|---|
1 | Chandigarh |
2 | Narkanda |
3–4 | Kalpa |
5 | Tabo |
6–9 | Kaza |
10 | Chandratal campsite |
11–12 | Manali |
13 | Chandigarh |
Choose homestays in Kinnaur and Spiti. They are useful for local food, guidance and understanding road conditions.
8. Best time to visit
Month | Recommendation |
|---|---|
May | Some snow and uncertain high-pass access |
June | Good, subject to Kunzum opening |
July | Good, but monsoon risk on Kinnaur roads |
August | Scenic but higher landslide risk |
September | My recommendation |
October | Increasing snowfall and closure risk |
November–March | Winter expedition; no complete circuit |
Himachal Tourism identifies April–October as a broad travel season, while the district administration says the Kunzum route generally closes around October/November and reopens around June/July depending on snow.
9. Current road and safety information
Important for November 2026
Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza
Manali–Kunzum–Kaza
Chandratal access
Check these official sources before departure:
For high-altitude riding:
Carry warm and waterproof riding equipment.
Keep offline maps downloaded.
Allow sufficient time for acclimatisation.
Never attempt a water crossing if the depth or current is uncertain.
Carry a puncture kit, tyre inflator and basic tools.
Avoid riding at night in remote mountain stretches.
10. My recommended final plan
Agra → Spiti → Agra
Duration
14 days
Total distance
2,200–2,400 km
Estimated budget
₹31–45K
Best season
September
Route sequence
Agra → Chandigarh → Narkanda → Kalpa → Chitkul → Nako → Tabo → Dhankar → Kaza → Langza → Hikkim → Komic → Key → Kibber → Kunzum → Chandratal → Manali → Chandigarh → Agra.
One additional suggestion: Since you enjoy motorcycle touring and travel photography, keep Day 8 and Day 10 flexible. The sunrise at Langza and the evening landscape around Chandratal can be particularly rewarding for photography.
You can use this as your Spiti riding bucket-list trip for 2027.
